Positive INTERN Mindset

Positive INTERN Mindset

Character, positivity, plus the willingness to work hard and learn – that should be the goal of every INTERN.

I believe that an expert in anything was once also just a beginner. Confidence on your first day as an intern, is not walking into a room thinking you are better than everyone else but seeing the opportunity that this is not just another day, but rather another chance at making your dreams come true.

Everything you do as an intern is for your future.  Strive not to be just a success but rather to be of good value as well. Waking up early every morning as an intern, I adjusted my mindset to see new opportunities.  To be the best coachable candidate possible, and to have the determination to learn something new each day.

The reality of working in an office environment, definitely exceeded my expectations. Yes, you will have difficult clients. Yes, you will work extra hours and have to put everything you have into a specific project. But, while doing everything in your power to provide good quality work, at the end of the day you will come out a better person.  Why? because you learned, you conquered, you did what you loved most – and it probably made a difference in someone’s day.

I am so grateful for the opportunity that Fine Design Interiors gave me. I can confidently say I would not have grown and learned as much as I have these past 2 weeks without their constant guidance and mentorship. I especially enjoyed their warm and inviting atmosphere. Every morning when I walked into the office I was welcomed with heartwarming smiles and loads of laughter. At the end of everyday I walked away with valuable information that I learned while being in contact with this professional team. It truly was a pleasure working alongside them and seeing them in action. I look forward to taking what I have learned with me into my studies.

Whether you have been in the industry for 30 years or its your first day as in intern, I believe a beautiful day begins with a beautiful mindset. Learn something new each day, that will lead you to new horizons – MY best is yet to come. Adele Agenbag

Go big, go bold, take it home

Go big, go bold, take it home

I don’t know about you, but since the lockdown, the feeling of re-decorating a few spaces in my home is quite strong. I decided to look at new trend ideas that have been predicted for 2020.

Doing some research on trends for 2020, I stumbled on many articles all saying different things and suggesting different trends to follow. (I mostly used Architecture Digest knowing it is a trusted source.) Considering all these suggestions and focusing on those trends that are repeated more than once throughout all the articles, I’ve came to the conclusion that these would be the trends to watch and to be inspired.

Architecture Digest calls this decade “Neo-Deco”. It is time for geometrical forms and interpretations of neutral hues. One of their design forecasters said that this is the time for design interpretations to be anything but boring. Here are four of the most dominant trends.

#1 Simple Luxuries

Architecture Digest says this year the significant design trend is going minimal. However, there is a twist; instead of the black white and grey minimal style, it is going to be with warm neutrals, “a Cozy Scandinavian” look. They also call it the lived-in look. That is exactly what we need, a place that is pleasing on the eye and comfy. Our inner child can come out and relax with this style.

#2 Dark wood becomes lightwood

It is also suggested to use dark wood for interior instead of the same old light wood. According to the article “dark wood finishes will bring a sense of elevated luxury and elegance”. This direction is quite different from the light wood that we are used to, but it creates a completely different atmosphere in your space, giving it a more cozy sitting by the fire with a cup of coffee type of vibe.

#3 Natural longing

Architecture Digest predicts Indoor gardens will become a trend. People will be longing for the essence of nature more than ever, and this will lead to having natural elements inside our homes. From big and bold botanical murals to funky natural decoration statement pieces, a new and bold trend is introduced.

#4 Geometric shapes

Art Deco inspired spaces will also start showing its’ self again. Using geometric shapes like circles, rectangles, and stripe motifs combined with earthy tones is the way to go.

This year , decade even, sounds like a lot of fun in the design world. It is THE time to go wild with our interiors and not look back.

Have fun in these moments.

Inky Pinky Ponky

Inky Pinky Ponky

In the previous blog, “Something Blue”, I mentioned that you don’t have to paint a wall if you would like to bring in a colour in your space, but what if you feel bold and want to paint an accent wall? Today we will discuss how to choose the correct wall to make as your focus.

We all experience uncertainty when deciding to paint a space. Should I paint the whole space one color? Should I do an accent wall? Which wall should I paint if I need an accent wall? How many walls should I paint? The list of questions can go on forever.

Today’s post is focused on answering all those questions and uncertainties.

1. The accent wall: how will I know which wall is the accent wall? ( the practical way)

There is probably a hundred different ways to choose your accent wall, but the easiest one for me is very simple and something everyone can do. Go to the space you want to paint, but before walking into the space, forget about everything inside the space and how the space looks. Then walk in. The first wall that you notice should be your focus wall/ accent wall.
The reason behind this is that you would like to draw attention to a wall that will compliment your space from the very second you walk in.

2. What other options do I have except for an accent wall?

There is so much more to painting walls than one would think. Our first instinct is always to repaint the same old accent wall. But the fun starts when you can manipulate the space by the way you paint it. For example, you can make a space look larger than it is or make it look smaller by using different painting techniques. The options are endless.

Say for instance you have a small space, you should paint all the walls and ceiling the same color, but in a light neutral tone. This will create the illusion that the space is much bigger than it actually is.
Or
If you have a very large space that feels like the halls in Sound of Music and you would like it to look smaller, you should paint all the walls and ceiling a darker but neutral colour. This will immediately make the space feel smaller than it actually is.

Maybe you have a space that is large enough, but the ceiling feels too low and you would like to create the illusion of a higher ceiling or a bigger volume space, here you should paint the walls a bit darker and leave the ceiling a lighter color.

Reversely, if the space is big enough but your ceiling is too high for your taste, paint all the walls in a light neutral color but give the ceiling a darker colour. This will create the illusion of a dropped ceiling and leave you with the feeling of a lower ceiling.

These tips are just a few basic examples for the decorating magic that can be achieved by using paint in the right way.

Below I have attached a photo I’ve found on Pinterest that visually explains what wall to paint and what effect it gives you.

I hope that this post gives you a better idea of what to do with that magic paint brush we are all dying to use, and the best part is now you won’t need to stand there and go “Inky Pinky Ponky, what wall do I paint”.

Happy painting and enjoy every creative moment with these endless possibilities.

Something Blue

Something Blue

Classic Blue… 2020 colour of the year.

“ PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue, a solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on…
Classic Blue encourages us to look beyond the obvious to expand our thinking; challenges us
to think more deeply, increase our prospective and open the flow of communication.”

– Leatrice Eiseman

Leatrice Eiseman couldn’t be more accurate about the colour blue. At first thought, it might appear as such a common shade, but our minds can explode with ideas on how to use this colour and be more creative in our space.

By considering all the different ways we can incorporate this shade in our design, we are creatively challenged to do more than just paint a wall and be on trend. It is all about creating a unique experience, finding pleasure and calmness in a space, and experiencing the eye-catching blue factor.

Blue doesn’t have to be your only hue; a splash of this colour can also make a statement.
And that dear readers is the beauty of blue. ANYTHING GOES, the options are endless.

You can do a few scatter cushions in blue, a funky statement piece which is covered in blue, a furniture piece that has been covered in blue, a big picture with blue hues. The options are endless.

House and Leisure’s Louise Zun wrote an article “ Dune Living” where she takes us through Berber Lodge situated in Marrakech, Morocco. This lodge is a very good example of how to use this classic blue by positioning a blue arm chair in the salon area. It definitely makes a statement beside the other beautiful pieces of this Moroccan style lodge.

Moving back to some local spaces, Make Studio recently designed an amazing new hotel in Oranjezight, Cape Town. Visi magazines’ Amelia Brown covered this amazing transformation. Make Studio not only used blue as a statement colour but also as a mood setting colour in some spaces. For example, in the bar area the chairs and a statement wall have been created using blue to create the calming yet spectacular emphasis. In the atrium, blue once again creates a statement in the middle of the space.

I’ve created a Pinterest board called “Something blue” where you are more than welcome to look at some amazing inspirational photos.

Take this shade, and let it inspire you. Be creative, Be different. and Have fun with BLUE!

Till next time.
